Our Commitment to a Safe Community

At St. Martin’s Hawksburn, we believe that every person is created in the image of God and deserves to feel secure, respected, and protected. We are dedicated to fostering a culture of safety, particularly for children, young people, and those who are vulnerable. Having a culturally safe environment for Aboriginal children is particularly important. All children and young people at St. Martin’s are to be respected and valued.
Safeguarding is more than a legal obligation for us; it is a fundamental part of our Christian ministry and our care for one another.
Our Safety Standards

We maintain a “zero-tolerance” approach toward any form of abuse or misconduct. To ensure our church remains a sanctuary for all, we adhere to the following pillars of safe ministry:

  • Holistic Screening: Every staff member and volunteer involved in child-related ministry must hold a current Working With Children Check (WWCC) and undergo a thorough internal application process.
  • Mandatory Training: Our leaders complete regular safeguarding workshops to ensure they stay informed about best practices, legal requirements, and how to identify and respond to risks.
  • Clear Accountability: We operate under a strict Code of Conduct that defines appropriate behavior and boundaries for all representatives of our church..

Creating a Culture of Transparency

We recognize that safety requires constant vigilance. We encourage a “speak up” culture where concerns can be raised without fear. Whether it is a minor concern regarding a policy or a serious allegation of misconduct, we are committed to listening and acting with integrity.

How to Report a Concern

If you have concerns about the safety of a child, or if you have experienced or witnessed inappropriate behavior within our community, we urge you to come forward.

  • Internal Contact: You can speak directly with our Safe Ministry Representative, office@stmartinshawksburn.org.au.
  • Leadership Contact: You may also contact our Vicar or Child Safety Officer at office@stmartinshawksburn.org.au.
  • External Reporting: If you believe a child is in immediate danger, please contact the Police (000) or your local Child Protection authority.

All reports are handled with the utmost confidentiality and in accordance with our legal reporting obligations.

Support for Survivors

We acknowledge the profound pain caused by abuse within institutional settings. St. Martin’s Hawksburn is committed to offering a compassionate response to anyone who has been harmed. We are here to listen, to offer support, and to walk alongside you in a way that respects your privacy and your journey.

Our Policies

Our ministry is guided by comprehensive safety policies that cover everything from digital communication to physical safety and incident management. These documents are updated regularly to reflect current legislation and the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations.
